Miami-Dade police arrested Juan Martinez-Gonzalez again today and charged him with improper disposal of a dead animal and sanitary nuisance. Police were able to identify Gonzalez through bloody fingerprints found in an abandoned van following an anonymous tip on May 26. The van contained two coolers of horse meat and a bag of horse legs.
Gonzalez was previously arrested on December 21 on animal cruelty charges. Police identified Gonzalez' fingerprints through the police database. The owner of the vehicle, Ramon Clemente and his friend Modesto Chavez-Villa were arrested for loitering and prowling. This was the fifth arrest during the crackdown on horse slaughter.
Since 2009 there have been 24 horses stolen and carved up for their meat. Police believe the meat is being sold on the black market, and are warning citizens of the dangers of consuming meat not intended for human consumption.
In December, Santiago Cabrera was sentenced to five years in prison for the stealing and cruel butchering of two horses. Another co-defendant is awaiting trial. Law makers promise that anyone involved in the cruel, illegal slaughter of horses will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
