State and federal authorities are on the trail of a meat thief who took 41,350 pounds of ground hamburger meat worth an estimated $95,000.
Geneva Police Lt. Ricky Morgan said police started the meat theft investigation earlier in the week after a local business owner reported a tractor trailer parked behind his business for a long period of time. Morgan said police found what later turned out to be an empty tractor trailer behind the Martin Farms businesses on West Magnolia Avenue in Geneva.
Morgan said investigators found the 18-wheeler, from Grand Coteau, La., empty of its entire load of 22 pallets of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved ground beef.
“As a result of the investigation, we have located a little over half the meat,” Morgan said.
Morgan said investigators found 14 pallets of the stolen meat at a Hartford grocery store.
But he said they’ve ruled out any criminal involvement from the grocery.
Morgan said Hartford police, agents with the USDA, along with other federal authorities are also involved in the investigation.
Morgan said they have a suspect in the theft, and expect to file arrest warrants in the next couple of days.
“We have identified a suspect, and are in the early stages of obtaining warrants for his arrest,” Morgan said.
Morgan said police also believe more than one person was likely involved in the theft.
“This is the first time I can remember us having a cargo theft of this nature,” Morgan said. “It’s definitely most unusual, just due to the dollar amount of it.”

Abandoned van with horse meat in Miami-Dade leads to arrest

Miami-Dade police arrested Juan Martinez-Gonzalez again today and charged him with improper disposal of a dead animal and sanitary nuisance. Police were able to identify Gonzalez through bloody fingerprints found in an abandoned van following an anonymous tip on May 26. The van contained two coolers of horse meat and a bag of horse legs.
Gonzalez was previously arrested on December 21 on animal cruelty charges. Police identified Gonzalez' fingerprints through the police database. The owner of the vehicle, Ramon Clemente and his friend Modesto Chavez-Villa were arrested for loitering and prowling. This was the fifth arrest during the crackdown on horse slaughter.
Since 2009 there have been 24 horses stolen and carved up for their meat. Police believe the meat is being sold on the black market, and are warning citizens of the dangers of consuming meat not intended for human consumption.
In December, Santiago Cabrera was sentenced to five years in prison for the stealing and cruel butchering of two horses. Another co-defendant is awaiting trial. Law makers promise that anyone involved in the cruel, illegal slaughter of horses will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

EastEnders actor bragged on Celebrity Mastermind about stealing meat
Derek Martin, an EastEnders actor, boasted about committing a crime and then lying about it on the stand at the Old Bailey when he appeared on Celebrity Mastermind.

The 77-year-old, who plays Charlie Slater in the BBC soap opera, admitted stealing £10,000 of meat in 1961 – equivalent to £150,000 today.
Chuckling while recalling his trial at the Old Bailey, the veteran actor said his only regret was that he didn't end up with the goods.
He was working at Smithfield meat market in London when he stole the beef, he told the prime time audience.
As Mr Martin sat in the famous chair to answer general knowledge questions, presenter John Humphrys asked him about his crime.
He said: "Didn't you once convince a jury that you hadn't pinched some meat from Smithfield?"
The actor replied, while smirking: "Yes, a long time ago in 1960-odd, yeah."
Mr Humphrys said: "Did you steal the meat?"
Mr Martin replied: "£10,000 worth, yeah."
Mr Humphrys said: "Oh, it wasn't just a chop?" To which the contestant boasted: "No, no, no, it wouldn't have been held at the Old Bailey if it was just a chop."
When asked if he felt guilty, he said: "No, I was just choked I never got the meat."
He then said that after the trial a female jury member congratulated him on his performance from the dock and said he ought to become an actor.
Some viewers were disgusted with the BBC's glorification of crime.
One said: "It was a prime time slot on the BBC and there was a villain bragging about his crimes.
"The BBC should not be helping glorify crime because there might well be impressionable people watching.
"At least his low scored proved he wasn't very bright."
The actor, who was born in Bow in the capital, has previously written about his early life as a criminal and admitted hiding guns for the Kray gang.
It was in 1961 when Mr Martin – who worked as a porter at the market – and some colleagues planned to steal the haul of beef.
He was caught and charged with larceny and receiving, but was acquitted after a three-day trial and escaped a two-year prison sentence.
On the programme, Mr Martin answered questions in the first round on his specialist subject "Westerns" and scored just seven points.
After the general knowledge round he finished with a final score of 16.
The winner was former England rugby player Brian Moore who finished with 30 points.
